- What is a Certificate of Fitness?
- A Certificate of Fitness (often called a COF or C of F) is a certificate the New York City Fire Department issues to people who do fire-safety jobs, such as fire guards, place of assembly staff and fire alarm supervisors. Most require passing a written, multiple-choice exam at FDNY headquarters.
- Where and how is the exam taken?
- At FDNY Headquarters, 9 MetroTech Center, Brooklyn. Each exam is multiple-choice questions on a touch-screen computer, with a time limit. The FDNY's booklets set a 70% passing score for every exam we cover, and the general Notice of Exam lists a $25 application fee.
- Are these the real exam questions?
- No. Fire Guard Test is independent. Every question is original, written from the study material the FDNY publishes free, and each explanation tells you where the fact is in that official booklet. The real exam uses its own questions.
- Is the official study material free?
- Yes. The FDNY publishes a free study booklet (PDF) for every exam on nyc.gov, and we link to it on each certificate page. Read it: our questions help you learn and check that material, not replace it.
- What do I get if I buy?
- The full question bank for the certificate with an explanation for every answer, practice by topic, and unlimited timed mocks at the real exam length. It is a one-time payment for 12 months of access, with a 14-day money-back guarantee.
